The Nightmare<\/em> <em>by Henry Fuseli <a href=\"http:\/\/faculty.wartburg.edu\/wilson\/arthistory\/images\/28\/28-39.jpg\">wartburg.edu<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/purefilmcreative.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/henry-fuseli-the-nightmare-1781-copy.jpg\">image <\/a>public domain.\u00a0 Incubi were regarded as real in law in the Middle Ages but are now regarded as an effect of sleep paralysis.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Trump is not a demon\u2019 it argues, \u2018he\u2019s just a man, flawed and limited, who by accident as much as design, has ended up, probably ill-prepared and ill-equipped in the Whitehouse: a malign version of Chance the gardener, in Hal Ashby\u2019s film <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Being_There\"><em>Being There<\/em><\/a>.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>During the campaign we had \u2018Trump the Movie\u2019 but once he heads a government, Trump will face challenges in balancing the demands and conflicting interests of business, the Republicans in Congress, the expectations of his voters, relations with other countries, his inconsistent and sometimes incoherent economic agenda, and the markets.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump Whitehouse script will be written more by external events and forces outside his control, challenging his self-myth of omnipotence and showing a very different reality to the way he promised to \u2018make America great\u2019 once again.\u00a0 <strong><em>Campaigning With Trump In The Whitehouse<\/em><\/strong> suggests that we have probably already reached \u2018Peak Lacquer\u2019 and the gloss will soon start to come off the stack of promises Trump made to the electorate.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed this is already happening in his relations with China, as Trump\u2019s financial borrowing plans for his \u2018infrastructure\u2019 package effectively push up the dollar relative to the Yuan.\u00a0 Likewise, although he has populated his administration picks with climate sceptics and promised to bring back coal, the markets suggest they have arrived too late to stop the shift to renewables and storage, which are now starting to out compete both coal and gas.<\/p>\n<p>As with the Brexiteers, Trump promised to turn back the clock to a world that in many ways no longer exists, and simple but grand claims (such as the power of his \u2018deal-making\u2019) which may not stand the test of real politics.<\/p>\n<p>A Trump Presidency will almost certainly be bizarre and it may be catastrophic \u2013 let\u2019s hope not \u2013 but it could also turn out to be a lot more ordinary than his election campaign promised.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1387\" src=\"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/photo-by-Notions-Capital-Flickr-Creative-Commons-Credit-Notions-Capital-Flickr-CC-2-0-DT-angry.jpg\" alt=\"photo-by-notions-capital-flickr-creative-commons-credit-notions-capital-flickr-cc-2-0-dt-angry\" width=\"640\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/photo-by-Notions-Capital-Flickr-Creative-Commons-Credit-Notions-Capital-Flickr-CC-2-0-DT-angry.jpg 640w, https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/photo-by-Notions-Capital-Flickr-Creative-Commons-Credit-Notions-Capital-Flickr-CC-2-0-DT-angry-300x157.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>photo: Notions Capital (Flickr\/CC 2.0)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And as some psychologists have suggested, Trump\u2019s own psyche (eg an overwhelming desire to be seen as a winner and a blithe disregard for truth) \u00a0may also even lead him to do surprising things, such as abandoning pledges and changing tack.\u00a0 This, and the exigencies and vicissitudes of simply being in office, may open up opportunities for campaigning which are currently hard to imagine, especially if you take Trump The Movie and make it your mental reality.<\/p>\n<p>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Campaigning-With-Trump-In-The-Whitehouse.pdf\"><strong><em>Campaigning With Trump In The Whitehouse<\/em><\/strong><em> here<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>photo: D-Vare under Creative Commons licence With Trump to be in the Whitehouse, many \u2018progressives\u2019 are truly horrified at the possible consequences.\u00a0 But if campaigns are to work effectively, campaigners need to guard against an \u2018ethical panic\u2019, especially among supporters &hellip;
