{"id":308,"date":"2014-02-11T16:03:08","date_gmt":"2014-02-11T16:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/?p=308"},"modified":"2014-02-11T16:03:08","modified_gmt":"2014-02-11T16:03:08","slug":"pure-values-dog-whistle-daily-mail-calls-for-overseas-aid-claw-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/?p=308","title":{"rendered":"Pure values dog whistle: Daily Mail calls for overseas aid claw-back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Flood-victims-D-Mail-cover.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-307\" alt=\"Flood victims D Mail cover\" src=\"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Flood-victims-D-Mail-cover.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"647\" srcset=\"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Flood-victims-D-Mail-cover.jpg 640w, https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Flood-victims-D-Mail-cover-296x300.jpg 296w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The UK is currently suffering significant flooding, following unprecedented rainfall.\u00a0 The climate-sceptic newspaper the <a title=\"D Mail petition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2556282\/Put-UK-flood-victim-FIRST-As-flood-hit-Britons-endure-unimaginable-hardship-Mail-launches-petition-calling-cash-taken-11billion-foreign-aid-budget-help-them.html\">Daily Mail has begun a petition<\/a>, closely aligned to the demands of the anti-European party UKIP, to recall UK Overseas Aid to help the flood British victims.<\/p>\n<p>This is a pure values &#8216;dog-whistle&#8217;, guaranteed to polarise debate by pitting Golden Dreamer Prospectors and Settlers, against Pioneers.\u00a0 Presumably the <em>Mail<\/em>&#8216;s intention, apart from resonating with the values of its frequent readers, which it does (below), is to drive the Conservative-led UK Government further &#8216;right&#8217;, in fear of UKIP (whose <a title=\"ukip base\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cultdyn.co.uk\/ART067736u\/Council_Elections_2013.html\">electoral base is strongly Settler<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>Daily Mail<\/em>, frequent readers:<a href=\"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Mail-freq-readers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-312\" alt=\"Mail freq readers\" src=\"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Mail-freq-readers.jpg\" width=\"962\" height=\"679\" srcset=\"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Mail-freq-readers.jpg 962w, https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Mail-freq-readers-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 962px) 100vw, 962px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(data from CDSM\u00a0 www.cultdyn.co.uk\u00a0 )<\/p>\n<p>The values antagonism this plays on is &#8216;power versus universalism&#8217;, discussed in earlier blogs.\u00a0 At the top left of the values map (above) are the Golden Dreamers, Prospectors who, along with the &#8216;Brave New World&#8217; Settlers located next door in the Settler part at the top of the map, espouse values including &#8220;material wealth&#8221; (getting it) and &#8220;power over others&#8221;.\u00a0 This most often manifests itself as resisting power-by-others-unlike-me-over-me or over-us.\u00a0 Both power and wealth are perceived as a zero sum game &#8211; if someone else has it, I&#8217;ve must have less of it.<\/p>\n<p>This part of the values map is also the seat of climate scepticism.\u00a0 These factors come together in the <em>Daily Mail<\/em>&#8216;s well-timed clarion call to &#8216;get our money back off foreigners&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/power-v-universalism.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-311\" alt=\"power v universalism\" src=\"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/power-v-universalism.jpg\" width=\"869\" height=\"623\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Footnote:<\/strong>\u00a0 Predictably this has already sparked a counter petition <a href=\"https:\/\/you.38degrees.org.uk\/petitions\/cut-fossil-fuel-subsidies-not-foreign-aid-for-flood-victims-relief\">cut fossil fuel subsidies, not foreign aid, for flood victims relief<\/a> inspired by universalism (stopping global climate change).\u00a0 The more the debate kicks off along these lines, the greater the polarisation.\u00a0 If the second petition (which I have signed) was instead about &#8220;getting our money back from coal and oil companies&#8221;
