{"id":507,"date":"2014-09-18T16:51:28","date_gmt":"2014-09-18T16:51:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/?p=507"},"modified":"2014-09-18T16:51:28","modified_gmt":"2014-09-18T16:51:28","slug":"message-in-a-bottle-that-should-not-be-ignored","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/?p=507","title":{"rendered":"Message in a bottle that should not be ignored"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today Kumi Naidoo, international director of Greenpeace, is handing a bottle of Arctic meltwater to the UN Secretary General in New York, calling for the Arctic to be protected from oil and gas development.\u00a0 It contains six million drops, one for each of the six million who have supported the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/en\/\">Greenpeace Arctic campaign<\/a> with their signature.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s hope, for the future of our world and children, that this message in a bottle is not ignored.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly the track record is not good.\u00a0 Back in 1997 when I was a Greenpeace director I asked our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eastasia\/multimedia\/photos\/climate-energy\/in-1997-greenpeace-documented-2\/\">campaigners to visit<\/a> the huge (and to many scientists unexpected) crack that had appeared in the Larsen Ice Shelf in Antarctica.\u00a0 Greenpeace called for stronger against on climate change.\u00a0 Politicians took shelter behind &#8216;scientific uncertainty&#8217;.\u00a0 As usual, many in the media accused Greenpeace of scaremongering.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/larsen-water-s-Copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-509\" src=\"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/larsen-water-s-Copy.jpg\" alt=\"larsen water s- Copy\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/larsen-water-s-Copy.jpg 600w, https:\/\/threeworlds.campaignstrategy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/larsen-water-s-Copy-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a bottle of Antarctic (Larsen) meltwater I asked the team to collect for me.\u00a0 A bit dusty and sitting on my shelf here in England.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Larsen_Ice_Shelf\">Meanwhile<\/a>, most of the rest of the Larsen Ice Shelf has ended up somewhere in the ocean, getting warmer and warmer.<\/p>\n<p>Today Scotland votes on independence from the UK and politicians of all stripes are calling it the &#8216;most momentus decision that any Scot will ever take&#8217;.\u00a0 To be honest I doubt it, whichever way it goes.\u00a0 What a shame that they can&#8217;t muster up as much interest in a vote to keep the ice intact.\u00a0 And how tragic that the only ice-water left may one day be in such bottles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today Kumi Naidoo, international director of Greenpeace, is handing a bottle of Arctic meltwater to the UN Secretary General in New York, calling for the Arctic to be protected from oil and gas development.\u00a0 It contains six million drops, one &hellip;
